About a 5.1 surround system?

I wanted to buy a 5.1 surround system from Genius, but something struck me: my computer is a bit old and it's sound card is on board.

If I buy a 5.1 surround system, will it be compatible with my sound card?

If yes, will I still get the surround experience, or do I need to buy a better sound card?
