Algebra - inverse variation?i didn't get clear answers on my other question identical to this! pleeaaase help!

Soo, my dad wanted me to ask my algebra teacher this question today and i forgot!... >_< well that's beside the point....here's the equation:
x+y=8
why is this equation an inverse variation? please don't answer with "as x gets larger, y gets smaller" because it's apparently not so! &, IS it even a variation? i am so confused and desperate! please help meee! :o
