they speak Spanish there so therefore they are Hispanic BUT because they are on this side of the ocean they are known as Latino. The way I think of it is that they are Latino because they speak the Latino style of Spanish rather than the Catalan style from Spain.

Think of it as the difference between North American English and UK English, the same words but the pronunciations are a little different.

Both are both. The major difference is Brazil, which is in Latin America, but is not Hispanic due to the Portuguese influence. It is really just a semantic difference to most other people.
