How does particulate matter effect air pollution? The question is quite straight forward, there is nothing else that i can tell you. and if u can provide a site on which u think the answer is present, just add that to.

Particulate matter in the air can be in many forms and sizes. The most immediate impact on personal health is that which is around one micron in size. Size is important because larger sizes are often filtered out before they get deep into the lungs, and smaller sizes are breathed in and are exhaled. The most dangerous particles are fibers, like asbestos, which are one micron in diameter but have a longer length to them; these fibers become inhaled length-wise into the lungs, and then sit cross-wise, and do not get exhaled. Like other small particles -- for example, silicon dust from working in the granite industry -- particles in the lung get "healed" over or encapsulated, thereby producing scar tissue in the lungs. The result is less lung area to transfer oxygen to the blood. There is a high probability that this scarred tissue can turn to cancer.
Another problem is that many particles are liquid in nature, or liquid coated to a smaller particle. The best aerial sprays are designed to produce one micron particles, for they float longer in the air. Mosquito spray is an example, for the way to kill mosquitoes is to let them run into the poisonous globlets floating in the air. The problem is they are easily inhaled deep into the lungs, where they become absorbed into the blood stream due to their liquid nature.

If we consider European volcano issue which disrupted air traffic last for 1 month and is causing a point of concern this year as impact of global warming then we can surely say it can sufficiently jeopardize human civilization in many ways which we might not have thought so far.
