A fundamental concept of motors and generators is that they can be built to serve both purposes. The solid state electronic circuits that deal with energy are complex yet reliable, but what happens to the energy is very simple.

The idea is for a Prius is that you have a gasoline engine, an electric motor and a battery called a "traction battery." The battery can drive the car for period using the electric motor. The engine will be off during this period. This happens occasionally at lower speeds. During harder acceleration, both the engine and electric motor drive to give the maximum power output. During typical lower engine demand driving, the engine can drive the car and use the motor as a generator to charge the traction battery. Finally, when coasting or braking, the motor can generate energy to charge the battery by slowing the car down.
