We just finished The Scarlet Letter and I have to write a paper with an arguable thesis.
I want to write about how the "A" means different things/effects each person differently.
I'm not sure how to state that in a one sentence thesis (not three pronged) that is arguable.
This is what I have so far
The direction I'm headed
--Just as Hester plays different roles, the “A” embodies her ability to
--The A allows Hester to play different roles among the characters.
--The fluid nature of the a allows for the characters to take different stance on it
--The “A” was not seen as a sign that Hester was an adulterer.
--Hester was not an adulterer in the sense she was not treated as one.
Points (I can only use 3)
--Dimmesdale: it is a source of pain and inner turmoil
--Chillingworth: it is something to avenge
--Pearl’s fascination with the A
--Hester’s determination to live by the A’s rule
--To go from adulterer to able
