Genetically Modified food

Genetically Modified food? Genetically Modified food?

So my applied genetics class is doing a research project on genetically modified food. This means that your corn, could have the anti-freeze genes of a flounder, your soybeans, could have Bt (a pesticide produced naturally in soil bacterium, harmful to insects but not in mammalians) injected into them so they produce it naturally. There are many people who have strong feelings about this technology and I personally am not sure whether I am for or against it. If a plant is injected with genes from an animal, does that mean you are still eating part of an animal? GMO (genetically modified organisms) seeds are sterile and cannot reproduce. Also, about 90% of soybeans, 80% of cotton, and 60% of corn sold in our markets are genetically modified. The FDA does not require labels for GMO products either. What are your opinions?

Other Answers:

No, I do not think you are eating part of an animal but your body is designed to eat whole, organic, natural foods. Any variation from this can not be good for you, that is common sense. Genetically modified foods may be very hazardous for you or your genetics in the long term. We do not know what the effects can or will be, despite all the noise from the corporations....edit there is a big difference between genetically modified and plant breeding and trait selection as Burbank did it. Because it is currently popular does not mean it is good for us or will not at some time turn out bad for our health. Remember at one time science was sure the world was flat.

some gmo foods are labeled and i stay far away from them
look at the food's plu:
Gourmet magazine described the number code's meaning: four digits for conventionally grown, five digits beginning with 9 for organic, and five digits beginning with 8 for genetically modified

i do not use these foods because they were created by using vivisection. yes you are eating an animals dna. and that animals was tortured by mad scientists to make those franken-fruits and veggies

The consumer doesn't really understand what GM products are, other than what they print in newspapers. Personally, it doesn't worry me, but many people don't like change and that change often scares them. If the press said they were safe no one would worry, but the press like to make issues and everyone is worried.
