Damascus steel knife? Damascus steel knife?

I plan to buy a bushcraft knife ..The blade made up by damascus steel. My question is ,is damascus steel is very strong ?

True Damascus steel is very strong, but unlikely your knife is made from it.It is a prosess of forging the steel that makes it that strong, folding it over and hammering it over onto itself while very hot,and bonding the layers together through the prosess.Very old process, and time comsuming, and difficult to do properly,so that's where the expense comes from.Damascus,is in Syria, where it was created eons ago,and superior to the other blades from other regions then.the other excellent steel making region was in northern europe, like Germany, that created exceptionally strong steel blades, specifically Soligen. They are still trying to figure out how Damascus steel was created originally,in progress, but not resolved yet,so unlikely your's is genuine. They call it that, but a mimic of the true stuff.

Ok, lets define what is "Damascus" steel. The modern "Damascus" is basically any steel that shows a pattern. Patterns are accomplished by 1. manipulating the crystal structure or 2. by combining 2 or more different alloys together. The blade you are looking at is referred to as a pattern welded blade.
Damascus is only as strong as it's base components + heat treat and design. The strongest will be obtained by combining high carbon and low carbon steels. I do this by using steel cable. The patterns aren't real bold but are interesting none the less. To break it you must brake the hard steel and tear through the soft iron. The laminated stuff works the same way.

For greater edge holding I use all high carbon, varying alloy content from simple carbon to chromium/nickle alloys. These are what you normally find in pattern welded blades. A fine pattern that has many lamination's crossing the edge will offer the best edge holding. Properly done one can get the DCE or damascus cutting effect where the soft layers wear away faster than the hard layers almost making the blade self sharpening.
Is that blade good? Buy it if you like it, it won't compare to a well made hand forged blade but is much cheaper.

sorry for the overload.

First of all, it's unlikely to be real Damascus steel. That stuff is really expensive as they aren't sure how they made it.

We can make steel as good as it (frequently better) and can come up with the interesting patterns of real Damascus, but it's not really Damascus.

That said, if it's a quality Damascus-like steel then it will be very strong while being very flexible and would hold an edge quite well and would only require periodic honing to maintain that edge.

true Damascus steel is quite strong, not stronger than 21st century steel, but still plenty strong nonetheless. however, Damascus steel making is a lost art, chances are unless you're paying an arms & a leg for it it's not real Damascus, it could be modern steel made to look like Damascus or it's some kind of cheap imitation that is very inferior.

Damascus steel is weak only by the way it's made, specifically weak in gun barrels. the steel itself will not loose in strength compared to modern knife steels.
