Depends on what you want to do with the laptop. If you are doing graphics or video editing go with something like a VAIO they are always on top of the game.

I have had bad luck with Compaq and HP machines I usually buy Dell or Sony. Good luck.

I know that compaq is now the "cheaper version" in the HP line, so I would generally try to stay away from compaq.

Go out and get a Dell. they are the bst and you can get one for $500. In the Compaq one, it didn't say processor speed, amount of RAM, Hard Drive size, Optical drive, Operating System, how much...amongst others.
On the Sony, go buy a Dell!!
Ram, processor speed, Optical drive, hard drive size and operating system are on the list for important thins to look for in a new or used computer.
