Well, they will test your FSH and estrogen level through blood test (which is going to be the third day of your period) ... aslo they will order a semen analysis for your partner (it measures the sperm count of your partner) ...then they will take it from there depending on your results. Good luck!

Hi,

Obviously the choice is yours as to whether you think your partner should be tested for anything but in this situation IF there is a problem with one of you then your partner not getting tested straight away will only draw out the wait. And there is allllotttt of waiting. It can be the worst part.

My hubby and I went through the tests some years ago. You can expect an initial blood test when you go to the docs and then some referals to specialists if neccessary. Your partner will get his sperm sent away for annalysis. I warn you, the wait between appointments can be months rather than weeks.

Let my personal story be a little jolt for you; I have a long and sometimes slightly irregular cycle and my hubby has a perfectly healthy child from a previous relationship so you would have thought that after 18 months of ttc if there was a problem then it would be me......not a low sperm count! But that's what our problem is.

Good luck

I had the exact problem as you.
I have long cycles and they are never regular, I had some tests done when I was young, 15yrs old, and they never found anything wrong, they just put me on the pill to regulate me. Then after getting married and wanting children it needed to be investigated more, and plus my Dr was'nt very happy that my previous Dr shoved me on the pill!
Anyway, here is what they did for me.

My dr asked me loads of questions to start with and then requested that I should have some blood tests done.

The hormone they tested for is called FSH & LH they may also do a prolactin. Some of these tests can be done straight away or on a certain day in your cycle. These tests are to find if you have the ovulating hormone in your body.

Then he wanted to send me for a ultra sound but I had already had one done years ago. So he sent me to see a specialist. The wait was approx 6 weeks, and he asked me lots of questions, gave me an examination, which was unexpected to say the least!!!! and then sent me for a progesterone test (needs to be done a certain time in your cycle). I was booked in for a hsg, and hubby had to have 2 tests done for his sperm.

Now all this has taken 4 months in total by the time I'll see the specialist again.

The problem now is my hubby, not really me and we hare to be expected to go through IVF.

The best advice i can give, if you follow suit is to remember that it can be a long road, and if it is don't forget each other. It's the hardest thing i have ever had to go through, and i know that there is more tough times ahead.

You may not have to go through this, and no one prepared me, so good luck to you both

x
