Definitions of Indifferent, Nonchalant, and Phlegmatic? Definitions of Indifferent, Nonchalant, and Phlegmatic?

I know these words are similar but I was hoping someone could explain the subtle differences. Does indifferent have more of a negative tone? Tell me if my thoughts are wrong:

indifferent - uncaring, apathetic
nonchalant - more carefree, uneasily affected
phlegmatic - unexcitable

So, indifferent would be more of a negative meaning and phlegmatic is just emotionless. But, all three of them can be used for the same sentence right? Please explain the tone of these 3 words.
