There are two kind of robots:
1. Robot that controlled by remote controller.
2. Robot that could think by itself (artificial intelligence).
Robot type 1 generally more simple than Robot type 2. Robot type 1 made of control panel (many switches), and several motors to do several tasks.
While Robot type 2 with artificial intelligence needs microprocessor/microcontroller, several sensors, several motors, and program that should be run by that microcontroller. Programs put in memory ICs.
Robot type 2 could think with itself/could judge what action would be taken as different input comes. Sophisticated robot type 2 like robot in
human shape made by Japanese, which could dance/walk, etc.. Some
robots with artificial intelligence could find fire source use their sensors, extinguish the fire, and back to homebase without any single command from human.
Robot with artificial intelligence is very useful in production automation.
Production rather done by human who is not consistent, done by fabrication robots which do their tasks day and night without any complain, so increase productivity. Industrial robot never organize protest to ask salary increase, hihi.

1- try to draw your mechanisms and study it with full kinematic and dynamic analysis.
2- Inverse kinematic and dynamic also are important to figure out the trajectory needed and power for your actuaters.
3- now you can also make a simulation for your robot if you fall on a system of nonlinear equations for your kinematic and dynamic analysis.
4- If you are ready now to build your own model, try to know the type of your actuaters (DC, Servo, Step or Synchronous Motors...).
5- making interface with a controller and actuaters needed to drive.
6- the type of controller you use is also important.
