Grey vs. gray? Grey vs. gray?

i was trying to write a letter and i havent had to spell grey/gray in a long time and found out that both used. what should the spelling be? how did this come to be?

Other Answers:

grey is the british version, gray is american, just like colour/color

Americans use gray; British use grey.

If you write the Queen's English put "grey".
If you write American English, put "gray".

However, even in American English "grey" seems to be used for one's hair turning grey -- i.e. "greying".
I have not been able to discover how the two spellings came to be so different. The word comes from the French "gris", which doesn't help!

Although most British English users would spell the word as 'grey', the spelling 'gray' seems to be preferred by Americans. The derivation of the word lies in Old English, Old High German and Old Norse, where spellings and pronunciations would probably support either of the modern spellings.
