How to calculate overall GPA

How to calculate overall GPA? How to calculate overall GPA?

For instance, I want to calculate all of Fall, Winter, and Spring semesters together and get the overall GPA from all three semesters instead of getting the GPA from each individual semester..

How do I calculate my overall GPA?

Other Answers:

Every letter grade has a point value, from 1.0 for a D to 4.0 for an A(A+). On a plus/minus grading system, an A- would be 3.7 grade points, for example. Multiply the grade points for each grade by the number of units for each class. So an A in a 5 unit class would be 20 points, while a C in a 3 unit class would be 6 points. Add up all the grade points to get grade points earned. Add up all the units to get units attempted. Multiply the units by 4 to get the maximum possible grade points. Divide the grade points earned by the max grade points, then multiply by 4 for the GPA. Here's an example

A- 4 units, A 4 units, B- 5 units, C+ 3 units, A 5 units.

(3.7 * 4) + (4 * 4) + (2.7 * 5) + (2.3 * 3) + (4 * 5)

14.8 + 16 + 13.5 + 6.9 + 20 = 71.2 points earned

4 + 4 + 5 + 3 + 5 = 21 units attempted

21 * 4 = 82 max grade points

71.2 / 82 = 0.8683 * 4 = 3.47 GPA (don't round up)

You have to use the units because a 5 unit class is worth more than a 3 unit class, so the GPA is weighted by units. This calculation can be used for any number of semesters to calculate the average for that period of time. You can search for plus minus grade points to get the values for each letter grade.

A short cut is to multiply the GPA for one term by the number of units for that term. Add up those grade points and then divide by the total number of units. 3.0 for 30 units, 3.5 for 32 units, and 4.0 for 24 units = 298, 298/86 = 3.46 GPA.

Fall GPA + Winter GPA + Spring GPA = y
y / 3
Just like how you would calculate averages in any 5th grade curriculum :P
