Guitar Pickups?

I don't know much about pickups. What's the difference between single coil, triple coil, humbuckers, and whatever else there is? Is upgrading the pickups a good way to upgrade a guitar without getting a new one and if so, how do you pick a good pickup? Any other important information on pickups would be nice too or a basic overview. Thanks.

i own 2 guitars one with singels and one with buckers. humbuckers cancel all hum threough the guitar by putting 2 single coil pups together and creating a canceling magnetic field, they give a more warm full sound with punch on the bridge pup. single coil are much more middle range and cutting through ex: stairway to heaven solo, but they dont cancel the hum unless you get a stack single coil pup like i did
id defienetly upgrade pups if you could afford it they really "beef" up your guiasr and add more tone

most every pup sounds diff so youre going to have to tell me what youre looking for in sound quality to find out with pup youll want

It all depends on what kind of music you play. Different pick-up and effects combinations produce different tones. Go to your local music store and ask them what they recommend for the style of music you play.
